SAP S/4HANA customer assessments:  6 Lessons Learned

Paul Smitherman |

We specialise in helping our customers build complex business cases for their SAP S/4HANA implementation. Our functional and technical assessments help them to identify and prioritise their business processes and determine how they will change and improve in SAP S/4HANA.

Here are six key lessons gained from our experience:

  1. Our assessments save time and money

Our customers agree that our functional and technical assessments really do work, saving them time and money and enabling them to make the right technology decisions that will support future growth. The process is straightforward; for mid-sized companies within approx. 20 days we’ll deliver a tailored assessment of your corporate landscape and technology requirements and the reasons to migrate.

  1. Most customers opt for a Brownfield conversion approach

A Brownfield conversion approach is the preferred choice when migrating to SAP S/4HANA as it allows customers to build on their existing SAP environment without re-implementation or disruption to existing business processes. While there is no silver bullet, and there are scenarios where a greenfield approach is more suitable, most organisations opt for a gradual transformation. If you don’t want to re-invest your processes and start from scratch then a Brownfield approach minimises effort, time and reduced costs.

  1. A phased approach is the way forward for a SAP Fiori adoption

Our experience shows that customers love SAP Fiori for their users’ experience; once they see its capability then they really want to deploy it.  But it’s a big change for the organisation and one of the biggest aspects of an ERP transformation that requires change management, mainly because you’re dealing with the end users’ experience of the system. Therefore, we recommend to our customers that they roll out SAP Fiori in a phased approach across a series of smaller projects rather than one large big bang, in order to reduce the impact of the change on the organisation as well as keep costs down.

  1. Identify the compelling reasons for migration

There is always a perception with technology that if it isn’t broken then why change it?  Apart from the fact that ERP is reaching end of life, it is normally specific business reasons that drives the migration onto the SAP S/4HANA platform. This may be anything from expansion into new markets or a drive to harmonise the business into one way of working across several countries. Whatever your objectives, we’ll work together to define your compelling reasons and feasibility for a migration to a platform that is built for growth, SAP S/4HANA.

  1. Through value discovery we can quantify the benefits

As well as assessing your business reasons for a SAP S/4HANA migration, you can add a value discovery option that will take a more structured and deeper dive to actually quantify benefits in monetary terms. In only a couple of  extra days you can gain this additional financial management information that will support your business case, and ultimately your decision making process.

  1. We pay attention to your custom code

While standard codes are transferred from one software to another, custom codes are more complex. These process complexities and adjustments can have a varying impact on your migration costs. Even before the conversion begins and as part of the technical assessment we will analyse your custom code and provide advice and costings for adjustments.

How can we help?

To ease your migration decision making we offer our customers an assessment that enables you to get an idea of your SAP landscape and the impact on your business. For mid-sized companies, it usually takes approx. 20 days and is a useful exercise as it will answer your questions, provide insight into the recommended project approach and look at your systems architecture and anticipated costs.

Our assessments are business-critical and ensure your project can be kicked off very quickly. So call us and find out how you can start your SAP S/4HANA conversion.
