The release of ABAP on SAP Business Technology Platformis set to benefit developers, according to Tamas Szirtes, recently interviewed for TechTarget. But, he warns, developers will need to learn new techniques in order to use the new model and be familiar with ABAP Core Data Services (CDS), the primary technology focus right now.
CDS is set to fundamentally change the way developers build applications as it is the new way of building a data model, and the same across any SAP technology. The article also predicts that moving to a DevOps model will be the biggest change for traditional ABAP developers and will require a culture change in the IT organisation. With upgrades being released in SAP S/4HANA (not SAP NetWeaver), developers will need to embrace continuous integration and delivery within their organisations.
The future of ABAP is strong across new SAP technologies and its release onto SAP Business Technology Platform reflects SAP’s investment in its S/4HANA product.
