How RPA capabilities are growing with SAP?

The global robotic process automation (RPA) software market grew 63% in 2018, making it the fastest-growing segment of the global enterprise software market, according to Gartner. This technology that automates repetitive business processes is particularly useful in data-intensive processes where RPA can replace mundane human tasks.

SAP has recently entered the market with an integrated SAP Intelligent Robotic Process Automation solution, which has been combined with its existing SAP Leonardo machine learning capabilities.

Why is it relevant to your business?

RPA technology relieves business software users from performing repetitive tasks and enables both attended and unattended RPA within and across applications. It reduces errors as there are less output variables and at the same time increases consistency.

There are many SAP Leonardo examples to help showcase the benefits of RPA. Here are just a few simple ones:

  • Processing invoices: Automating accounts payable to reduce the manual or email-based processing of large volumes of invoices from suppliers.
  • Supplier onboarding: onboarding new suppliers is often still a manual process, despite the fact that many companies have introduced e-invoicing. RPA can be used to vet new suppliers with reporting on credit scores, tax data, and so on.
  • Financial closing: This process involves many steps and tasks in order to deliver your financial filings, from posting data from lots of sources and from different departments and systems. RPA mitigates the process.

So what is SAP doing in this area?

SAP has taken a deeper dive into RPA with its ‘Intelligent RPA’ offering. Late last year it acquired Contextor, a European leader in the design and integration of RPA focused on helping SAP accelerate the development and expansion of its SAP Leonardo Machine Learning portfolio. The Contextor software is being combined with the SAP Cloud Platform, AI technology and the document processing capabilities of SAP Leonard Machine Learning to deliver Intelligent RPA.

SAP goes deeper because it understands the underlying integration technologies and data services. Its combination of technologies and use of Machine Learning means that RPA will self-learn, getting better and better, the more you run it.  As the bot learns, your processes will become more automated and efficient, enabling your technology to future proof your business. You can also include chatbot software in there too, making it even more intelligent.

In terms of pricing, SAP’s Intelligent RPA is charged on a per bot run, so you only pay for what you use.
