Fluxys is a major operator of international natural gas transmissions and is present in nine European countries. It is independent from any producer or supplier of gas or electricity and its three main roles are transmission, storage and LNG terminalling. The company operates the Zeebrugge LNG terminal. Driven by its first-mover approach, it has developed infrastructure into the crossroads for international gas flows in North Western Europe. New pipelines are needed to guarantee natural gas supply in the future. Fluxys works closely with all parties involved, such as the authorities, operators and land owners to map out pipeline routes as carefully as possible.

With 31 planners and 200 technicians both on and off site, together with around 50,000 orders coming in each year, Fluxys has its work cut out keeping abreast of the maintenance and management of their pipeline network. To do this they use SAP Plant Maintenance (SAP PM) to manage inspections, carry out maintenance and other measures to maintain an ideal technical system. It also connects to external tools such as GIS Systems, asset management databases and document management systems.

To support their working processes the company had previously developed an in-house planning tool together that worked with their SAP system. But with continual new industry regulations and a considerable SAP upgrade meant that the in-house tool could not support the requirements.

Fluxys needed a new solution that would be fast, secure and flexible enough to adapt to the specific needs of their technicians and planners as well as easy to use with a graphical interface. It would also need to integrate seamlessly with the company’s existing SAP PM environment.
